Ok.  So, the majority (by 2 people) of you who took my survey last week were right about Drake’s album sales.  Roughly 450,000 is good for your “first album.”  But, let’s not let this lull us into a false sense of security about the state of Hip-Hop album sales.  Take a look at all the other numbers up there.  The Nappy Roots, whose first album went platinum, and second album went gold, sold less than 2,000 units first week.  Crooked I came out with a compilation of unreleased material, granted, not a full-blown new album, and not a full-blown marketing push, but still, after Slaughterhouse’s success, 300 units is lacking.  Curren$y also came out with a release that is not an “official album,” but he should be selling more than 173 units, even on an all digital title mixtape.

.

So here’s my question for the end of this post.  Yesterday, Eminem’s new album dropped, as did Miley Cyrus’s new album.  Will they both outsell Drizzy?  Will neither of them?  Hit me with a comment and let me know what you think.  Also, as usual, if there’s any releases that you didn’t see covered here that you’re curious about, feel free to hit me up, and I’ll do my best to include them.

Til next time…

Peace.

  1. Hip Hop sales are dead. This is a good thing though. Now only artists that truly have talent and desire will make music because there is no economic incentive to be a rapper anymore.

  2. Or it could backfire in that the only artists making money, are the ones making super whack commercial songs. I just hope to god you are right.

  3. The thing is you got excellent groups like Nappy Roots only pushing 2k??? Man that has to be tough. Almost all of their music is inspiring, thoughtful, fun, introspective, conscious, etc. Maybe one or two songs for the club or radio. So its quite disheartening to see that sales are bad for even good artists.

  4. I feel bad for Rhymefest… Chicago didn't stand up for him at all last week or this week. El Che is a dope album and he has some fresh ass videos on YouTube. Where's the loyalty these days? He can pack out a show with 5000 people but only 1800 have bought his album so far? Same for Nappy Roots… Makes no sense. Seems like a conspiracy against acts like this… The FBI might be trying to kill hip hop by altering soundscans….

  5. I think Eminem and Miley will wash drake I bet atleast 610k for Em, he has the suburbs on lock
