Former NBA great Alonzo Mourning, along with his former Miami Heat teammate Dwayne Wade have started a relief fund to help aid the relief effort in Haiti, having raised more then $800,000 in donations from their athlete friends. All of the money raised will be donated to Project MediShare, a group that has helped bring higher quality medical support to poor nations such as Haiti for 15 years, and is now a major part of the earthquake relief effort. The list of donors for this new fund is a who’s who of former teammates or close friends of Wade, who claims he is trying to get every player in the NBA to make some sort of donation. With LeBron, Kevin Durant, and Chris Paul all donating $100,000, and Wade himself donating $175,000 (one game’s salary), they seem to be setting an example to the rest of the athletes in America as the list of donors keeps growing. There is also a strong presence of NFL players such as Randy Moss and Wes Welker on the list of donors.

Mourning spent about 36 hours in Haiti last week, traveling with Miami-based Project Medishare, which has worked to bring health care to the nation for about 15 years. The retired All-Star worked at a makeshift hospital and assisted rescue workers and first responders in the devastated capital of Port-au-Prince get badly needed supplies like water, food and medical equipment.
“It is the most devastating, deplorable images I’ve ever seen in my life,” Mourning said Monday in Memphis, Tenn. “[An] inhumane atmosphere to where we can only pray and do the best we can to assist those individuals.”
“The response from our colleagues has been overwhelming,” Mourning said. “We accept these donations with complete confidence that Project Medishare will put each dollar to quick and efficient use.”
LeBron James: “Since first learning of the tragedy in Haiti, I was intent on finding a way to help,” James said. “I feel fortunate to be in such a position to provide support and my heart and prayers continue to be with the people of Haiti.”
