I can’t say their deal is structured exactly the same, especially considering that in the future we will be dealing with less and less mechanical sales.  5 years from now will there even be physical digital copies of music such as mp3’s or will everything just be revenue sharing on streaming music?  Why not control 100% of those revenues?  People need to think more like music publishers as opposed to record executives.  That’s pretty much what Odd Future is doing with this Sony/Red deal.  This is really the name of the game in 2011.  No more record companies.  Just music distributors and music companies.  Below is a tweet from that Tyler guy and a message from Odd Future’s manager, Chris Clancy.  Spotted at RR.

It’s based on getting the distribution deal we’ve always envisioned that allows the group to “sign  themselves” to their own company and keep their masters. They will have 100% creative control of all aspects of their music, art, and release schedule with no 3rd party participation in outside business. Freedom and ownership was the whole point. Red and Sony know that its in everyone’s best interest to maintain the group’s authenticity and control. They built it, they deserve it. There’s no cheesy hooks or fluorescent liquor product placements in the works..  It’s about to be fun.. and different..

Sidebar:  However notice that Tyler, easily the star of the group is signed to XL Records.  That is where he is dropping his upcoming Goblin project.  While it may have been a one album deal they are still involved in the record company system.
