The Dose

I just put Distant Relatives back in the rotation this week, which reminded me that Nas’ pen game is not fading as he gets older. With this track, I’m not a fan of the monotonous mixtape beat, but Nas is going for the gusto on this, off DJ Green Lantern’s Invasion mixtape which just dropped this week. Now if we could just get that Nas x Pete Rock rendezvous that folks were mentioning that would be great.

This is cool, Miami Beat Wave provides a soulful joint that Skyzoo uses to paint a smooth picture on, literally… “script was a facade, I calligraphy the bars.” Wrekonize kills this not only on the hook, but with lines like, “hm…he’s like BP petroleum leakin’ in your oceans and there’s no sign of slowin’ him/ or controlling him, so bow down and submit, these labels burning up quick cuz they been on some f*ck sh*^.” This will get some burn in the whip for the rest of the summer.

With records like this it’s evident that Asher has come a long way since his “I Love College” days. He’s been swaying more toward an underground selection with previous collaborations such as, “Childish Games” with Consequence and now he is set to drop his next project, Rawth EP with Nottz Raw. Lyrically, Asher puts this one into submission and leaves you with great anticipation for the album. Nottz is a great complement away from the boards as he hops on the second verse, but it’s clear that Asher is showing you who is boss with lines like, “y’all been gettin’ me wrong, think i’ll never get on/empathetic with a sentence cuz I’m up in the lawns. F*ck that if you think that I’m soft/ take a skull clean off, sip your brain through a straw.”

Who ever said that rappers from the south weren’t lyrical, that is slowly changing with the likes of Jay Electronica, Curren$y, and now Big K.R.I.T. The beat flaunts soulful keys, laced with drums that set the tone for a serious track that puts you into a focused state of mind and K.R.I.T. keeps it 100 dropping intellectual bars that motivate anyone that can understand his “interpretation.”

One of the more overlooked emcees that still has some spit in him. I like the beat, it gives you that ride out vibe. Lyrical ability on this is decent, but Obie still shows some promise, maybe he just needs to get a little more hungry to start rhyming like this again.

Not sure who Sonic is, but I pay attention when Statik Selektah is involved. Statik is known for his boom-bap touch and scratched hooks, however with this beat I was hoping to hear something other than the expected norm. For some reason I felt it could have sounded better without the cuts. Dope delivery from all three emcees, and I’m looking forward to Statik Selektah and Termanology’s album, 1982, dropping October 26th.
